During the 2020-2021 school year, which has been entirely virtual, I cannot say there are many days that I have ended my day and said "Now that was a success!". However, after many weeks of teaching about nonfiction books and reading nonfiction books and learning about informational writing techniques, my students have completed and published an information writing piece that I can say I am proud of as a teacher. They have not only learned technology skills that they didn't know before, but they put it all together to make these amazing pieces of writing! I want to share one piece of writing with you from on of my English language learners. This student wrote all about camels. The instructions were to use only information that they knew themselves. This was NOT a research project. I gave the students slide templates and they wrote in the slides and added pictures from Google Search. Look at how this student's work came out!
Information Writing: A Virtual Experience
I really am impressed with how many of my students wanted to make their writing better and once we began to publish and present out informational writing they worked even harder! I created these Informational Writing slides solely for my students to complete their writing assignment, but it made my life as a teacher so much easier because the students had the format for which to write about their animals (main idea/ details, pros and cons, cause and effect and more).
You can grab these slides here if you are looking for a great way to work on informational writing digitally or virtually.
