Poetry Month

It's almost April, which means it's almost National Poetry Month! I know a lot of classes learn about poetry around this time.  I was never a big fan of teaching poetry, but my third graders love reading fun poems and hearing the rhyme and rhythm.  They love to share poems they have found and poems they have written!

We always start our poetry lesson with learning about poetry and one fun way to introduce it is through Kwame Alexander!  The videos he adds to youtube are so fun and easy to understand.  Here the first video we showed in class about 'Defining Poetry".

After we talk about poetry the students go on a scavenger hunt and find poems they love and add it to their own Jamboard.  You can make a copy of this Jamboard by clicking the link below.  My goal in this is getting the kids excited about writing and reading poetry.  I begin by reading a few poems from books on Epic!Books like Pizza and Other Stinky Poems or Ode to the Comode!  They love these funny rhyming poems.

Once the students have explored some poetry it's time to right some of our own! I always start by reviewing skills they will need to write a poem, especially a rhyming poem.  So reviewing rhyming words, syllables, imagery, similes or metaphors before writing certain types of peoms is important.  Here is a Poetry Resource that has those word work skills as well as poetry writing activities included.

This resource really is a life saver when it comes to hybrid and virtual teaching.  It has google slides and printable pages.  Also, if you haven't tried out Teacher Pay Teachers Easel Activities they are similar to Google Slides and easy to use too! They poetry activities are also available through that resource.

You can check out the full version of the slides by clicking on any of the pictures above!
Have a fabulous week!
